Hair Extensions and Scalp Care

Extensions are an exceedingly popular way of changing up your hair by adding volume, body, and length. When deciding what kind of extensions are right for you, it’s important to consider possible damage possible to your hair and scalp. There are two types of hair extensions that generally cause the least amount of damage over time: tape-in and microlink extensions.

Tape-In Extensions

As discussed in previous blog posts, there are many different types of hair extensions. The types mostly vary based on application processes. This is where the main difference between tape-in and microlink extensions lies. Tape-in extensions have a very fitting name. Each weft of hair is taped onto one’s natural hair with medical grade tape. Tape-in extensions are not permanent and can be removed at any time. However, they can also last up to six months if you properly care for them. This means stopping into the salon every eight weeks to get the wefts moved up and sticking to a good hair and scalp care routine. Tape-in extensions do not damage your natural hair as they require no heat or chemicals in the application process and use no beads to pull on your scalp.

Microlink Extensions

Microlink extensions are a more permanent hair extension option. These are applied using tiny beads. A stylist pulls your natural hair through the bead and then clamps it shut, linking your hair and the extension hair. If cared for properly, microlink extensions can last up to nine months. Like tape-ins, microlinks also need to be moved up around every four to six weeks. Without using any heat, glue, or tape, microlink extensions allow for a relatively permanent and natural-looking change to your hair.

Scalp Care and Scalp Facials

It’s always incredibly important to consider the all-around health of your hair and scalp (especially if you regularly get treatments). According to Elle, “scalp care is the new skin care”. It’s true that “the skin on your scalp is just like the skin on any other part of your body” (Elle). Thus it requires proper care and maintenance in order to keep it healthy.

In addition to regular scalp care routines such as scrubs and leave-in conditioners, stylists are now recommending monthly scalp facials. Yep, scalp facials. They’re just like regular facials, but for your scalp. Scalp facials consist of a variety of treatments in order to remove the buildup of oils and products. Most treatments begin with an assessment of your scalp’s health — is it dry and flaky or excessively oily? This ensures your specific needs are taken care of. These treatments generally follow the same regiment. First, a treatment of some kind (such as a mask) based on your needs, then a steam, a shampooing, and a scalp massage. These steps are designed to keep your hair follicles alive and active and your hair growing healthily. Stylists who offer these treatments usually recommend stopping by once a month or so.

Scalp care is very important, especially if you frequently get treatments done, such as extensions or chemical treatments. It can be easy to forget, especially when we already worry so much about our hair. But caring regularly for your scalp will result in an overall healthier looking head of hair.
